What is there to do in the Westkapelle area? Find out here!
From cozy coastal towns like Westkapelle, Vlissingen and Middelburg to adventurous seal safaris.
Westkapelle
At the very western tip of Walcheren lies Westkapelle. There is plenty to do and see here. Westkapelle beach is, of course, not to be missed. This clean beach is lovely on summer days, but even when the weather is less pleasant you can take long walks on the beach, walk on the dunes (did you know that one of the highest dunes in the Netherlands can be found here?) or take a walk or bike ride through the Westkapelse woods. After a day at the beach or a long walk, settle down in one of the cosy restaurants in the village on the main street or at one of the beach bars. There are also nice shops, lighthouse and museums to visit.
Vlissingen
In Vlissingen, walk along the longest boulevard in the Netherlands, grab a terrace by the harbor or explore the nature and recreation area Nollebos. Other attractions in the port city include the Keizersbolwerk, the Zeeuws maritiem musZEEum and the Arsenal. Vlissingen was also the birthplace of mariner Michiel de Ruyter. On the boulevard, his statue looks out over the water. Between Breskens and Vlissingen, the Westerschelde Ferry (bicycle-foot ferry) sails, taking you very easily to the other side.
Lighthouses Westkapelle
Westkapelle in Zeeland is home to two lighthouses, both of which can be visited. Lighthouse 't Lage Licht on the Zeedijk and lighthouse 't Hoge Licht on the Zuidstraat. From the lighthouse on Zuidstraat, you have a great view over the North Sea, the beach, Walcheren and in brighter weather you can see the coastline of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, Lighthouse 't Lage Licht is right on the coast.
Middelburg
Although a large part of Middelburg was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1940, many historic buildings have been restored to their former glory. Stroll through the idyllic streets and squares of the capital of Zeeland. Also take a look at the Vismarkt, paved with cobblestones and with large chestnut trees and the town hall of Middelburg. Or climb the 90.5 meter high abbey tower 'De Lange Jan'.
Seal safari with boat trip Vlissingen
During the summer months of July and August, Rondvaart Vlissingen allows you to take a closer look at seals on one of its round trips every Friday and Saturday. The round trips depart from Vlissingen's inner harbour, to the Westerschelde, along Michel de Ruyter and to the Hooge Platen where the seals are resting. For more information on the various tours, boarding times and reservations, visit the website of Rondvaart Vlissingen / Rederij Dijkhuizen.
Polderhuismuseum
Discover the history of Westkapelle at the Polderhuis Museum. The dike and war museum tells the history of Westkapelle during the war, the battle with the water, the Battle of the Schelde and reconstruction. You can buy a souvenir in the museum shop and have a drink on the terrace outside in the museum garden. For more information on current exhibitions, activities and opening hours, check the website of Polderhuis Westkapelle.
